Usually movies fall into one of two categories for me: theater or dvd, which really just means that they’re worth ten bucks a ticket or they aren’t. But my local AMC has started doling out 4 dollar tickets for weekend matinées, so now those movies that previously fell between the two categories have a home. Walk Hard was one.
It’s genuinely funny in lots of places, though even as I was watching it I kept thinking that somehow a number of the bits would read better on paper than they looked when fully realized. It’s a shade better than your typical SNL movie in that it feels more like a movie than an extended sketch, though some of the bits are right out of the Top Secret / Naked Gun tradition. It’s also a hard R, so depending on the condition of your grandmother’s heart you might want to avoid taking the family.
I enjoyed it for 4 dollars. 6 might have been pushing it.
